The Latin American Club at my school hired me to design their magazine in 2019. Here it is.
There was a lot that went into this, and here is what I learned.
Editorial work is exciting when it can be versatile, but at the end of the day the details cannot be overlooked.
In the end, it will show how much time was put in. So make it count.
I love design, but a lot of the times you can see the results right away. Illustrating, building shapes, or building custom type. With a magazine the largest part is organization of information. I was constantly taking new copy, placing it in and typesetting it to make sure it was well structured. Sometimes information had to be taken out, photos needed to be replaced, resized, or recoloured.
It’s a very adaptive role, but in the end I developed my teamwork skills as well as communication. At the end of the day there is a deadline, and the magazine needs to be pushed out whether everything is in or not.
I want to focus in on the first page. LAC is a colourful group, filled with diversity and culture. I wanted to have bold vibrant colours that would match that. I used these colours in the way I organized information. With a small amount of space, I needed to find a way to identify the members without cluttering the photos. I decided to use the colours as keys, and keep all the naming along the side.
Now to the table of contents. It was not a direct decision to reinvent the wheel, but for the sake of space I needed to find a way to make a more horizontal table, so I created a timeline. Interestingly enough, the table of contents then doubles as a timeline with it being in the order they occurred. I love when opportunities line up this way.
